Step ten: flatten all your layers. duplicate your image once and set it to soft light at 56%

Step eleven: (optional) add text, sharpen your image, etc.

Make the above icon in Photoshop 7

Step one: Pick out your base image, resize, etc. Paste it onto your icon base.

Step two: This, of course, looks completely AWFUL, so I colored my base layer with #F2E3CE to blend with my image

Step three: Still, I didn't like how this looked (too dark and orange!), so I created a selective coloring layer with these settings:
WHITES: 100 // -10 // -29 // 10
and got this:

I still wasn't completely satisfied, so I duplicated my selective coloring layer once and set the opacity to 31%

Step four: I felt that my icon needed a bit more depth, so I whipped up this texture, drug it under my selective coloring layers, and set it to screen at 100%

Step five: Still, I wanted more depth, so I created a new layer, filled it with #7B7A86 (erased the middle with a nice, fuzzy brush) and set it to color burn at 100%

Step six: Next, I wanted my icon to have some texture, so I took this (by peoplemachines) and drug it onto my icon. I again erased the middle part and then set it to multiply at 50% or so

Step seven: At this point, I added some tiny text to my icon. Set it to multiply at 48% or so

Step eight: Time for the coloring! Create a new layer filled with #F5D580 and set it to soft light at 100%

Step nine: Create a selective coloring layer with these settings:
REDS: -100 // 0 // 100 // 29
YELLOWS: -100 // 0 // -17 // 0
WHITES: 40 // 22 // -15 // 28
NEUTRALS: 89 // -2 // -56 // 8
and you'll be left with something like this:

Step ten: I thought that my icon was still a little bland, so I created a layer filled with #E1E1E1 and set it to color burn at 45%

And that's it!

in Photoshop 7

Step 1: Pick out your base image. Images that aren't overly colorful tend to work best for this tut.
Crop it to 100x100 pixels, brighten it, etc.
You'll want to make sure that it's relatively light, but not washed out!

Step 2: Create a new layer and fill it with the color #260202.
Set it to exclusion at 100%

Step 3: Create another layer and this time fill it with #261E02.
Set it also to exclusion 100%

Step 4: Duplicate your base image, drag it to the TOP of your layers, desaturate it and set it to soft light at 72% or so
(the settings will vary depending on your image. Don't be afraid to play around with the opacity!)

Step 5: Finally, I wanted to give the image a bit more of a yellow-y look,
so I created a selective coloring layer with these settings:
REDS: 7 // 5 // 68 // 0
WHITES: 0 // 0 // 0 // -20
NEUTRALS: 4 // 2 // 5 // -8
BLACKS: 0 // 0 // 0 // 2
You should be left with something like this:

For my second icon, I followed the EXACT same steps as my first icon, save I first desaturated my base using a gradient map. (I generally use gradient maps when working with black & white icons as it give the image a bit more clarity and depth than Photoshop's plain old desaturate feature)
Also, I set my selective coloring layer to 77% percent, as it had made my icon a bit TOO yellow.

If you don't know how to use a gradient map to desaturate an image, here's the 101.
Start by click on the little circle thing on your layers palette

A menu should pop up

select the black and white square and hit ok.
voilà! you now have a black and white image!

Create a new layer and fill it with #000518. Set it to exclusion at 80%

Step Five:
Create a new layer and fill it with #EFEEE3.
Set it to multiply at 23%

Step Six: Time to add more contrast to the image!
Create a new selective coloring layer with these settings:
REDS: -43 // -8 // -9 // 4
YELLOWS: 100 // 0 // -21 // -54
CYANS: 74 // -36 // -93 // -36
WHITES: 60 // -4 // -18 // -50
NEUTRALS: 3 // 2 // 2 // 0

Coloring Manga/Comics

Made in Photoshop 7. Is most likely translatable.

Step 1. Pick out your base, crop it, etcetera. This was mine:

I thought the grainy background was a bit distracting,
so I created a new layer and drew over it with white

Step 2. Pick out a gradient for your background. I used this texture by Hybrid Genesis.
Drag it onto your image and set it to multiply. I erased the texture from Ed's face - it doesn't have to be prefect.

Step 3. I picked out another part of the texture to use for his hair.
Past it on your image and set it to multiply. I used the polygonal lasso tool to remove the unwanted parts.
Duplicate the hair-texture about four times (it will vary depending on the texture you're using)
You'll want it to be dark, but not too dark.

Step 4. Pick out a texture for the face. I used this one (no idea who it's by. If you know, please tell me!
All I know is that it's been sitting on my hard drive a heck of a long time. heh)
Paste it on your image and set it to multiply at 100%
Again, I used the polygonal lasso tool to remove the unwanted bits and got this:

Step 5. Next, I created a new layer, took a nice fuzzy brush with the color #E72E16 and colored his coat. Set it to color burn at 100%. It though that looked a bit dark, so I duplicated my layer, drug in UNDER the color burn layer and set it to linear light at 17%
The result?

Step 6. Time for the fun part!
Create a new layer, fill it with FFF3C9 and set it to multiply at 100%

Step 7. I took this texture (again, no idea who made it) drug it onto my image and set it to linear burn at 39%

I know, this looks a bit dark, but we'll fix that.

Step 8. Take your original base image (the one with the grainy background) copy and paste it on top of all your layers
and set it to hard light at 37%

Step 9. Create a gradient map
(if you don't know how, look at your layers palette. on the bottom is a black and white circle. click it
)
select the back and white gradient, click OK and set it to 20% opacity or so.

Step 10. (optional step) I create some text using the font Arial with kerning of 550.
I also added some oh-so-famous tiny text.

And voila! You're done!

My version of Photoshop 7 has been acting really screwy lately...

Every time I go to open Photoshop, I get this message:

and then I find that all of my custom brushes/settings have been completely wiped! It's driving me insane!
Any help with what's wrong/how to correct this is greatly appreciated!

Q: How can you tell when a person has an absolutely pathetic lack of a life?
A: When they start answering the "Writer's Block" questions.

"When did you stop believing in Santa Claus and why?"
Okay, it's obvious I'm not much of a blogger. In fact, this will be my first ACTUAL BLOG on Livejournal... but this question elicited a certain sense of nostalgia and an array of memories I was compelled share :)
First off - I NEVER believed in Santa Clause. Yes. That's right. When I was a kid, my parents viewed the whole Santa thing as ridiculous... they told me right from the start that Santa WAS NOT REAL. Interestingly enough, as a naive and silly child, I believed in Rudolph. Yes, Rudolph. I KID YOU NOT.
"Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" had ALWAYS been my favorite Christmas story. I watched the claymation movie hundreds of times every Christmas season until I wore the tape out... My sister and I used pretend we were reindeer and PLAY the story. And like I said, while I knew Santa did not exist, I had my own theory that every Christmas, Rudolph would still somehow fly around they world in all his glory - red nose ablaze and the Christmas bells jingling... Oddly enough, my parents encouraged my ridiculous belief. One of my fondest Christmas-Eve memories found me, a 5 year old, in bed excitedly awaiting Christmas morning. When the clock hit 12 or so I was (of course, as all little kids are) WIDE awake with anticipation when all of a sudden, I heard bells jingling outside. They started quietly and grew and grew - a soft red glow shimmered through my window. I ripped my covers off, woke up my sister, and started SCREAMING "RUDOLPH'S HERE! RUDOLPH'S HERE! WAKE UP EVERYONE!" and ran to the window. Of course, I didn't SEE Rudolph out there, but I KNEW he was there. The next morning, when I raced down stairs to the tree to get my presents, I found a few addressed "To Stacee from Rudolph" My parents told me they had found them laying outside, and I excitedly told them about my "Rudolph encounter" the previous night. Of course they sat there with their grins and "how about that!"s...
I believe I was six or seven when my parents finally told me that Rudolph didn't actually exist - that what I had seen several years before was nothing more than my dad with an flashlight and bells. Of course I was a bit crestfallen at the time, but I knew that logically, he could never really exist.
What's funny - even to this very day as an 18 year old, I haven't been able to live it down. My family STILL teases me every year about Rudolph.

So what are some of your fondest Christmas memories? When did you stop believing in Santa? (or maybe... Rudolph. heh.) I would love to hear about it!

Achieve this coloring in Photoshop

Step 1: Pick out your base image, crop, sharpen it, etc.
Duplicate your image and set it to screen at 17% or so.

Step 2: Create a new layer and fill it with #FFD672. Set it to soft light at 59%

Step 3: Create another layer filled with #F3EDD6 and set it to multiply at 62%

Step 4: Make another layer, fill it with D1E4FE and set it to color burn at 89%

Step 5: Create one last layer, fill it with 001627 and set it to exclusion at 44%

Step 6: Make a Brightness/Contrast layer with these settings:
Brightness: -8
Contrast: +12

Step 7: Create another color layer filled with DBF0FF and set it to burn at 100%

Step 8: Create a Hue/Saturation layer. Up the Hue +3 and Saturation +19

Step 9: We're almost there!
Time for some selective coloring.
REDS: -100 / -22 / -1 / 0
YELLOWS: +100 / -72 / -80 / -55
GREENS: +100 / +4 / -100 / +100
CYANS: +100 / -53 / -29 / -59
WHITES: +14 / 0 / -23 / +14
NEUTRALS: +17 / +1 / +2 / -5

Step 10: Create a black and white gradient map
(If you don't know, don't panic! It's simple :)
On your Layers palette, click the black & white circle, hit "gradient map" and select the black & white one)

Set the gradient map to 40% or so.

Step 11: Create a color layer filled with FFE3DB and set it to burn at 100%

Step 12: Last step! Make one last color layer, fill it with DBF8FF and set it to color burn at 58 percent or so.

Achieve this coloring in Photoshop 7

Step one: Pick out your base image, and prep it, etc.
You'll want to make sure that your image is nice and bright, but not too washed out.

Step two: Time for, yep, selective coloring!
Create a selective coloring layer and put in these numbers:
REDS: -98 // +41 // -52 // 0
GREENS: +95 // +100 // -100 // +30
WHITES: 0 // 0 // 0 // -32
NEUTRALS: +5 // -22 // -10 // +4
This layer should bring out the pinks and greens of your image.

Step three: Create another selective coloring layer with these settings:
REDS: -100 // +20 // +100 // 0
YELLOWS: +34 // +41 // -27 // 0
MAGENTAS: +100 // 0 // 0 // +100
NEUTRALS: 0 // +10 // -2 // +5
BLACKS: 0 // 0 // +6 // +10
This layers serves to bring out the reds and add contrast to your image.

Step four: Create two new layers. Fill your first layer with FFF29E and the second with C8A7A7.
Set your first layer to soft light at 100% and the second to color burn at 47%.

Looks pretty gross so far, huh?
Don't worry, it'll get better soon. :)

Step five: Create a selective coloring layer.
We're going to tame those awful greens.
REDS: -31 // -4 // -3 // 0
GREENS: +84 // +83 // -100 // +100
NEUTRALS: +20 // +19 // -9 // -11

Still a bit green, but we'll fix that.

Step six: Create one last selective coloring layer
(you're probably groaning here, but as I said, it's the last one. Promise!)

How to go from this to

in seven simple steps

Step one: Pick out your base image and crop it to 100x100 pixels -
an image with a dark background works best.
I sharpened my image once, but this isn't necessary.

Step Two: I felt that my image was a bit too washed out looking,
so I created a selective coloring layer with these settings:
WHITES: 0 // 0 // 0 // +45
NEUTRALS: 0 // 0 // 0 // +10

Step three: I took this texture by discolore,
inverted the colors, desturated it, and flipped it horizontally to get this.
Take your new texture, paste it on your image and set it to screen.

Step four:I took this texture by graphic_sl ),
flipped it, and pasted it on my image set it to lighten.
I also erased quite a bit of the texture - it was a bit overpowering. ^.^

Step Five: Next, I took this texture (by peoplemachines)
drug it onto my icon and set it to screen.

Step six: Next, I created a some tiny text, pasted in on my image, and set it to lighten.

Step seven: Last step! I wanted my icon to have a bit more contrast,
so I created a final selective coloring layer with these settings:
WHITES: 0 // 0 // 0 // +36
NEUTRALS: 0 // 0 // 0 // +13

A beginner's guide

A quick and simple beginner's guide
for dealing with those pesky red/glowy images.

Ever come across an image you would love to use for an icon, but it's so redish and bright, you can't do a single thing with it? I've been in this frustrating predicament many times (it's especially common when using movie/tv screencaps) and have come up with a quick and simple fix using a few basic Photoshop elements. ^.^

Step one: Select you image. I took an image from "Northern Exposure"
(Capped by oxoniensis-art.net) cropped it to 100x100 pixels, and sharpened it once.

Step two: Looks pretty awful, doesn't it? Now, create a new Levels layer
(Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels) Put in these settings in the Input Levels boxes:
RBG: 14 - 1.49 - 255
RED: 17 - 0.96 - 255
GREEN: 10 - 1.28 - 244
BLUE: 0 - 1.35 - 234
You should be left with something like this:

Nifty, eh?

Step three: I still wanted my image to have a bit of a softer blueish tone, so I created two new layers
(Layers > New Fill Layer > Solid Color) filling the first with the color FF95F9 and the second with EBFFFD.

Pick out your base image. Crop it, etc.
A yellowish image tends to work best.

I wanted to give my image a redder hue, so I created a selective coloring layer with these settings:
(feel free to edit as necessary!)
REDS: -87 // 35 // -5 // 32
YELLOWS: -50 // -11 // -7
GREENS: 100 // 100 // -100 // 100
CYANS: 82 // -100 // 100 // 0
NEUTRALS: 8 // 9 // -13 // -2
That should leave you with something like this:

Next, I wanted to bring out the greens and blues,
so I created another selective coloring layer and put in these settings:
REDS: -54 // 20 // 1 // -10
YELLOWS: 36 // 18 // -13 // 0
CYANS: 100 // 18 // -72 // 0
WHITES: 76 // -7 // -23 // 29
NEUTRALS: 14 // -13 // 1 // 0

I still wanted more blue, so I created another Selective coloring laying with these settings:
REDS: -34 // 21 // 19 // -12
YELLOWS: 4 // 19 // -15 // 0
CYANS:76 // 11 // -5 // 0
BLUES: 50 // 20 // -30 // 0
WHITES: 38 // -20 // -22 // -7
NEUTRALS: 9 // -8 // -7 // 0

Next, I wanted a bit more contrast in my image, so
I created two new layers filling the first with #F5F5F5 and the second with #FFECEC.
Set them both to color burn - the first at 100 percent and the second to 30 percent.

Achieve this affect in Photoshop 7

Start off with a plain white base. Take this texture and paste in on your base setting it to 69% opacity.

Next, take this texture, desaturate it and paste it on your base. Set it to multiply at 100%

Take this texture and desaturate it. Paste it onto your image TWICE setting the first texture to screen and the second to color burn (both at 100% opacity)

Now that we've got the main base image done, pick out the image you would like to use on your icon. Images with a light background work best. ^.^
Take your image/resize/crop/sharpen/desaturate if necessary and past it on your image. Set the layer to darken at 100%.

Next, I wanted to bring out the image more, so I created a blank layer under image layer, took a fuzzy brush with the color #BABABA and
drew underneath my pic.

Lastly (this step is optional) I wanted to brighten the image a bit, so I created a selective coloring layer with these settings:
WHITES: 0 // 0 // 0 // -74
BLACKS: 0 // 0 // 0 // 3

Achieve this coloring in Photoshop 7

1. Pick out the image you would like to use. Lighten it, sharpen it, etc.
An image with a yellow hue works best.

2. Create a selective coloring layer with these settings:
REDS: 46 // 28 // -12 // 0
YELLOWS: 52 // -10 // 0 // 0
WHITES: 100 // -76 // -25 // -100
NEUTRALS: 0 // -4 // -3 // 0
Set the layer to screen at 20%
The purpose of this layer was to lighten the image. Feel free to tweak these setting to suite YOUR image!

3. Create another selective coloring layer with these settings:
REDS: 34 // 30 // -1 // 0
YELLOWS: 22 // 17 // 14 // 0
WHITES: 39 // -51 // -39 // 50
NEUTRALS: 0 // 0 // 5 // 0

4. Make another selective coloring layer and put in these settings.
REDS: -44 // 42 // 50 // 0
YELLOWS: 24 // -51 // -58 // 0
WHITES: 0 // -3 // -17 // 40
NEUTRALS: -21 // -6 // -10 // 0

5. Create one last selective coloring layer with these numbers:

Old fashioned tutorial

Achieve this coloring:

This tut was made in Photoshop 7
but is transferable to basically ANY program!

1. Pick out and prep your image. I duplicated mine twice setting the first layer to multiply at 78% and the second to screen at 66%.

2. Create a layer filled with FFD1F8. Set it to soft light @ 67%

3. Create a layer filled with 00183C. Set it to exclusion @ 100%.

4. Create another layer filled with CEFFFD. Se that layer to color burn @ 100%.

5. Now, duplicate your base image, drag it to the top of all your layers and set it to screen @ 46%

6. Make a layer filled with FBE9E9. Set it to color burn @ 100%.

7. Create another layer, and fill it with DAFFDD. Set it to soft light @ 21%

8. Create a layer filled with E7FDE9. Set it to color burn @ 49%

9. Make a layer filled with 000B27. Set that layer to exclusion @ 71%

Almost there!

10. Now you'll have to create a curves layer (Layer > new adjustment layer > curves - for photoshop users)
Go to the red channel and click on the graph-thing twice.
On the first click, put in these numbers:
INPUT:47 OUTPUT:36
On the second click, put in these numbers:
INPUT:199 OUTPUT:202
Now go to the Green Channel and do the same with these numbers:
(click one) INPUT:43 OUPUT:43
(click two) INPUT:228 OUPUT:226
Now go to the blue channel.
(click one) INPUT:52 OUPUT:47
(click two) INPUT:222 OUPUT:223

11. Now, create a Hue/Saturation layer. Decrease to hue by -1 and up the saturation by 7.

12. Create a Brightness/Contrast layer. increase the brightness by 4 and decrease the contrast by 2.

13. Create another Curves layer and put in these settings.

I erased this off his face/hands as it made his skin too dark and orangy.
Duplicate the Hue/Saturation layer as many times as you'd like (I duplicated mine twice)
You may sharpen/add text or whatever you'd like.

Create a new layer and flood it with 001535. Set it to exclusion @ 100%

Make another layer and fill it with FFB8F2. Set it to soft light at 24%

Create one last layer and flood it with FFF4A8. Set it to multiply at 13%

You may sharpen you image/whatever else you may like.
I sharpened mine once.

Pick out your image and crop it to 100x100 pixels. Your going to want to make sure that your image is nice and bright, so prep your image however you feel suits your icon best
(I duplicated my base image twice, set the first layer to screen @ 100 and the second to soft light @ 33%)

My goal was to really bring out the reds and the greens
feel free to tweak it to suit your image.
REDS: -100 // 100 // 100 // 0
YELLOWS: -100 // 100 // 100 // 0

I wanted the icon to have a softer bluish feel with brighter reds
Make another selective coloring with these settings:
REDS: -100 // 16 // 84 // 0
NEUTRALS: 0 // -6 // -14 // 0

Now, make a new layer and flood it with the color 652600.
Set it to exclusion at 34%

Create another layer and fill it with 88815D. Set that layer to darken at 9%

Create one more layer filled with 88815D and set it to soft light at 76%

Now, make one last selective coloring layer and put in these settings:
REDS: 64 // 2 // 23 // 0
YELLOWS: -30 // 20 // 29 // 0
NEUTRALS: 16 // 5 // -8 // 0

I also sharpened my finished image, but this is optional, of course
